Displays
In Making the Library Welcoming there are suggestions for brightening up the library, including getting young people involved with their ideas and input on how they want it to look.
This section looks at the books themselves and gives some general ideas for theme displays. You'll certainly have more to add to this list – and again, TRF Coffee Break (the online discussion forum) is the perfect place to share this with everyone.
Theme displays
- Books read by the library reading group and text with what they think of them – it could be a mixture of what they liked and what they didn't!
- Children's books recommended by local 'celebrities' – may be an old favourite or a current favourite with their children and grand children. Ask the local teachers, postman, store manager – everybody!
- Those books which you know are brilliant but sit on the shelves – put them in a display and into the limelight
- Book award winners, past and present
- Your library's Top 10 favourite children's books – get children to vote for what they like; get parents to vote for their favourites for sharing with their children
- Highlight comics and magazines, graphic novels
- Put a display of children's books in the adult library – again this could be old favourites, or ideas for sharing with their family, maybe for birthday and Christmas presents
- And of course there are the national reading events which inspire displays: the Summer Reading Challenge, World Book Day (launches new website) - and RaW (launches new website) the BBC's literacy campaign, which will include programmes and activities for family reading.
