Understanding Young People - Scenario B

You selected b:

Say, "I can't believe none of you like reading! Surely some of you have read Harry Potter?"

Feedback

  • You might think that you're being cheerful and engaging by taking this approach but it's a risky strategy when you don't know the young people involved.
  • Although you're probably joking, saying that you don't believe the young people is not showing respect for their opinions. Perhaps they genuinely do all think that reading's boring. Try to put yourself in their shoes and imagine that you have been dragged round somewhere that you have no interest in.
  • Perhaps you could use their lack of interest in reading as an opportunity to get to know them. Get them some refreshments and try asking them what they do like to do. Once you know their interests, you should be able to find them some non-fiction books relating to their interests.
  • It's a good idea to use a high profile book like Harry Potter to get their interest but without knowing them this could fall very flat. They might all hate the Harry Potter films and it's quite possible that their literacy levels might prevent them from reading wordy books like the Harry Potter series. Consider using magazines to break to the ice as the content is much more accessible and likely to appeal to a wider audience.
