Understanding Young People - Scenario B

You selected c:

Invite them to have some refreshments in the young people's area of the library and give them some magazines to look at. Say, "reading's not for everyone. What kind of things do you like doing?"

Feedback

  • It's great that you thought to organise some refreshments for the young people. It's a really good way to show them that you want them to feel comfortable and to dispel ideas about the library being strict and full of rules. Remember that brand names are important to teenagers and don't offer them Netto's cheapest coca cola and broken biscuits.
  • You're right to think about using magazines with the group. Magazines are an ideal way of getting young people interested in reading because they're easy to read and they stimulate discussions. If the young people don't seem to be looking at them maybe you could find a way to get their interest e.g. by reading out horoscopes or a quiz.
  • Your comments about reading are good because they validate the young people's experience. Don't avoid reading all together though. Once you know what the young people are interested perhaps you can point them in the direction of books that would interest them. If you don't have any books on e.g. skateboarding and graffiti, maybe you could invite the young people back to do some stock selection.
